                          Writing Prompts

A secret is revealed, for better or for worse.

                                                  Prescott Wordmongers

The writers in Prescott finally have an internet home! Originally brought together by National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2007, this site is designed to help us stay in touch all year long. The forums are private, as we sometimes share snippets of our original writing in hopes of constructive feedback. To gain access, all you have to do is creating an account.

While designed for writers of the Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Paulden and Dewey area, we welcome anyone in other nearby communities in Arizona. Come on in and set a spell!

                                                                          NaNoWriMo Kick-Off Success!

Wow, what a great kick-off! We had a grand total of 18 people who arrived, some of them completely new to our unique form of writing sanity. We also saw a lot of familiar faces from past years.

Much laughter and hilarity ensued through-out the evening. We had a presentation going over what National Novel Writing Month is, as well as a lot of tips on how to make it a successful month. We also played writer’s bingo, caged our inner editors, introduced ourselves and handed out a lot of goodies.

The Prescott Public Library was fabulous. They helped us advertise our event and it helped new people find us. The room they provided for us worked great and they even provided coffee, hot water for tea and a variety of cookies. Thank you Prescott Public Library! I'm excited about the continuing partnership with the library. I think it's a great relationship for both the Prescott Nano Region and the Library.

Thank you to everyone who came. It was a fantastic night!

                                                                                                  Nanowrimo Time!

The Nanowrimo site has reset! You know what that means, don't you? Yes, it means that Nano season is officially here!

Dust off those story ideas, start stocking up on November goodies, reconnect with that muse! Then come on over to the Prescott Regional Lounge in the Nano forums. There is a new "Introduce Yourself" thread, so come one over and start the conversation. We also have a listing of our Nano events. If you are interested in joining us for our Kick-off party, please respond to the Kick-Off thread.

In about a week I’ll start up the new 2009 word count quick reference page that will be hosted here at PWM. The old 2008 word count page has now been finalized with all the old data.

The big news for our region concerns the Prescott Library. The Prescott region of "National Novel Writing Month" is now in library partnership with the Prescott Library. This means several exciting things for the group. We have a place to meet with a library that fully supports our writing cause. The Library will also be helping to publicize our wonderful event, which means we might be seeing many new faces. The Library is also interested in building up the event in the future.

So, welcome back all you wonderful writers! Let's see if we can beat last years regional word count of 646954 total words. I know we can do it!

Do You Know Where Your Muse Is?

Summer is busy with such things as family outings, home to-do's, gardening and the like. It's easy to lose track of the time.

We are about 14 weeks from the start of the wonderful month of November. National Novel Writing Month will be upon us in no time! Right now is the right time to start looking for an idea for your new novel.

The big question: Do you know where your Muse is?

Is she still on vacation in Tahiti? Under a cabbage leaf? Out with your kids making mud pies in the monsoon rains?

It's time to start poking her for an idea. Time to keep the ears open and the eyes watchful. After all, you never know what will inspire her and you with the next big novel. A snippet in the news? A few words of conversation overheard at the grocery store? A particularly ferocious monsoon thunderstorm? A subplot in a book you are reading? An episode of a favorite TV show? A dream?

Your next idea could be anywhere. Time to start looking for it!

To help get you and your Muse into the writing mood, Prescott Wordmongers will be having an online chat meeting every Monday night starting at 7pm. Hope to see you there!

                                                                                                                                                  National Novel Editing Month

Note that the virtual meetings have been moved to Friday night. Currently we have no live meetings set up. Hopefully that will change sometime this spring.

The look of the website has been changed. The way it was set up before, it wasn’t very user-friendly to smaller monitors. This one will adjust its layout to however big your browser window it.

And you will discover a new logo up on top of the page, inspired by NaNoWriMo 2008. Enjoy!

Now, let’s get to the topic of writing. Did you know March is “National Novel Editing Month"? From March 1-31, the idea is to put 50 hours of work into your novel, whipping it into shape.

I’ve already signed up, and you can find me in the Arizona region forum. Even if you have only a few hours a week, how about getting out that novel and working on it again?

Editing approaches are as varied as how people write. Holly Lisle’s “One Pass Revision” is one method that may be of help. If anyone knows of any other web links, point them to the forum and I’ll see about getting them onto the Links page!

» Posted by Julieann on Saturday 14 February 2009 - 16:46:33 » Read/Post Comment: 0 » email to someone printer friendly create pdf of this news item

While there is still some graphic work still going on (including the main Banner and the banner in Chat), the site is up, running, and ready for activity. The Forums are open, I've started putting information in the Event Calendar, and Chat is operational.

The Chat, while it is tied to the main Database, is for some reason still asking for a login. I'm working to get that fixed. However, the exact same username and password for this side of the site works on for the Chat (which tells me it *IS* connecting to the database, it's just being a brat about seamlessly taking you to the chat room).

The Live Chat works in any browser, no special software required!

If anyone has any writing articles they would like to post, links, or suggestions, just let us know!

We are in the midst of setting up the website. For now memberships are turned off until all the configuration, settings and graphic work is finished (or at least usable). But expect the doors to open soon!
